TARSHIA HOLDER, C'93

I follow my passion in all that I do...yet, I continue to 'push, pull, press and stretch' trying to inspire others to do the same.

TARSHIA Educating Youth: Tarshia is a long-standing educator, with 21 years of experience in the field as a middle school English Language Arts teacher and Literacy Specialist. Many often approach Tarshia and ask if she has a desire to pursue an administrative position given her extensive background and lengthy experience. Tarshia’s response is always the same, “I prefer to be on the ‘front line’ in the classroom!”

A Side Hustle Where God Is At The Center: Tarshia’s side-hustle is volunteering at my church: New York Covenant Church in New Rochelle, New York. She is a co-founder of the church with her husband; and they began NYCC in 1988 with two close friends.

Those new to NYCC can expect a warm greeting, food, fellowship, conversation, worship, and truth. Visit the church’s website to learn how they Care, Build, and Empower.

Tarshia lead’s NYCC’s M.O.R.E. (Ministry on Relationship Enrichment) ministry for couples. She also gifts her talents to lead the women's ministry, GOD's SOIL (Gifted Obedient Daughters Serving Others in Love). “It gives me no greater joy than to serve the ministry and our community.”

Playin' The Game? Being My "Authentic Self": “The best way I know how to ‘play the game’ is to be my authentic self.  Most people know who I am and know where I stand. I follow my passion in all that I do and the end result is not usually a paycheck. Yet, I continue to ‘push, pull, press and stretch’.” Every day Tarshia is her ‘authentic self’ and hopes to inspire others to do the same.

TARSHIA's #SpelmanBlackGirlBrilliance Is A Lifetime Commitment To Service: Tarshia’s proud of personal and professional accomplishments that speak volumes about her commitment to the service of others. “Thanks to Spelman, I earned a Master’s degree from one of the country's best schools for educators, Teachers College of Columbia University. A solid foundation established at Spelman allowed me to build upon that knowledge at Teachers College, and I continue to use it creatively throughout my career. Twenty-three years ago I became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated and am proud to be active in an organization committed to public service.”

What's On Tap For This #Spelman Woman To Watch?: Tarshia has several targets in her sight for her next conquests. On the personal front my “focus is to raise a high school-aged daughter and middle school-aged son to be all that they can be by keeping God first and allowing Him to lead their path. My daughter's steps are leading her to the College Prep Institute at Spelman this summer!  Next, I am in the process of expanding my influence on the East Coast by pursuing election to a regional church board.  One of my specific goals is to expose New York Metropolitan-area children of color to Christian overnight camp opportunities available through our denomination.”

Just One News Source In An Apocalypse?: “If I had to choose, I would pick awesomelyluvvie.com. I, too, can ‘rock the red pump’ for several causes!” The Red Pump Project® is a nonprofit organization raising awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. (A word from Luvvie, dated March 2017, on why she will proudly #RocktheRedPump.) For more information and how to participate in or support this project, visit The Red Pump ProjectHappy Hour Tapas or Bottomless Brunch?: "“When I have time, I love to enjoy a great brunch with family or friends. I am fortunate to have several Black-owned spots within walking distance of NYCC. This makes for great fellowship after church!  Shout out to ‘Alvin & Friends’ and ‘A Place to Go’ restaurants!”
